During peer teaching, I had problems engaging with the audience. Even the class activity felt quite awkward in fulfilling the purpose. This might perhaps be due to the nature of my teaching content. However to think of it now, I think regardless of the nature of the speech content, various effort has to be put in to engage the audience. This is one of the many components to making an effective presentation. Even on the day before the final presentation, I still had problems in engaging the audience with my speech. Fortunately, the story which I included was rather effective in engaging the audience.
Apart from this, I thought having a speech text was useful even though it does not apply to all. As an amateur in giving speeches, the speech text allowed me to make my speech more conversational. It was useful in improving my speech every time I revise it together with my teammates. Also, I could make sure that I would not miss out on any crucial points during the presentation. As I did not craft a speech text for my peer teaching, I was able to see the contrast between the qualities of the two presentations.
Of course, other skills learnt during the module are equally useful such as interview and communication skills. Once again, I never regretted to have taken ES2007S because apart from the life skills learnt, I met a dedicated lecturer and many wonderful classmates. This has really been a memorable experience for me. I hope we can all move on with the skills taught in life and never forget to use and sharpen them along the way.
Hello Sam~
ReplyDeleteYeah I think most people aspire to be an influential speaker that deliver memorable speeches. Still a long way for us to be one indeed ;p
I totally agree about preparing a speech text. It really helps to plan and prepare the points we will be presenting. It will also help with the flow, and enable us to make adjustments and create a style for our presentation. And it definitely is not a tool for memorizing. By preparing a speech text, I feel it boosts my confident for the presentation. We should always prepare whenever we have the chance, except when all of a sudden we are asked to speak (like the last class! lol).
The lessons learned through this course would definitely help in our future professional career. Keep moving and keep in touch! haha
Cheers,
Yohan
Hey Sam,
ReplyDeleteI like you have learned a lot about oral presentations. I did not know that there were so many aspects of the presentations that we have to look out for. For example, how we should observe the audience to see if they are engaged in our presentation.
You mentioned you had difficulty in engaging the audience but I thought you did fine! The story of your final presentation is in my head.It was good that you tried to do so. I should have done something like that during my presentations too.
Thank you for being so friendly and bubbly in class, it has indeed been enjoyable having you as a classmate although we did not have group work together!:)
All the best for your exams!

Hey Sam!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that a speech text helps the presenter to prepare and plan the points the s/he will be presenting. Before I enroll in this module, I always thought that a speech text should come after the slides (by putting in the points and the elaborations together :D). However, I've learned that preparing a speech text before the slides helps me to organize my points and be more conversational during the presentation. Nevertheless, a speech text definitely assists the presenter to be less nervous and have clearer mind, whether it is prepared before or after the slides.
And as Zhi Yin has pointed out, thanks thanks thanks so much to be so friendly, bubbly and "talkative" XD in class, and during our discussion outside class. You made the various discussion we had so enjoyable and relaxing :))
All the best for your final exams!
Mei
Hey Yohan!
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you share the same views as me. You pointed out that speech texts are not supposed to be memorized but I am guilty of doing so! I want to familiarize myself with my contents but the more I practice, the more it became memorizing and soon the speech text is in my head. Nevertheless, I will try to let my speech 'come naturally' when presenting next time. Thanks for commenting!
Best regards,
Samantha
Hey Zhi Yin!
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting. I am glad my story stayed with you even after so long, haha. Well, I do admire certain aspects of your oral presentation. For example, how you could smile confidently when you started speaking. It captured my attention immediately, which is good!
I am glad that I was able to bring some joy to the class but without you and everyone else's great personalities, I guess I would never have been so outspoken during class. All the best for your future endeavour! :)
Best regards,
Samantha
